In NFL terminology, the "shield" specifically refers to a crucial protection formation used by the punt team. Its sole purpose is to safeguard the punter immediately after he kicks the ball, preventing it from being blocked by onrushing defenders.
How the Shield Formation Works
The Shield aligns directly in front of the punter just before the snap:
- Personnel: Consists of three players positioned side-by-side, 5-7 yards deep behind the line of scrimmage.
- Positions: Typically includes the Center (or Long Snapper) and two Guards from the interior offensive line.
- Post-Snap Action: These three players immediately turn to face the punter after the snap, forming a literal protective "shield" wall.
Responsibilities of Shield Players
- Immediate Protection: Absorb the initial contact from any defenders who break through the front line of blockers.
- Blocking Vision: Maintain awareness to identify free rushers threatening the punter.
- Wall Integrity: Hold their ground together; if one player is defeated, the punter becomes vulnerable.
- No Advance: Unlike other protectors, they focus purely on stopping rushers, not pushing them downfield.
